Replaced broken screen, get occasional phantom touches. topic

My son accidently dropped my 1st gen nexus 7 a while back and the screen cracked. I found a replacement screen and digitizer on ebay and ordered it then followed a video on youtube to replace it. All went well but every now and then I get phantom touches on the screen. I enabled "show touches" in developer options and sure enough, it registers multiple touches, even when nothing is touching the screen. It is not ROM specific in any sense, as I have tried multiple ROMs including stock but the problem persists. Turning the screen off then back on temporarily fixes it but it keeps happening. Any ideas on a fix?
