Sync the Browser on KitKat -> topic

From Android 4.4., the Browser no longer syncs with desktop Chrome. This APK brings the sync back. It is needed since the mobile Chrome sucks.

[Q] Email Sync After KitKat update topic

Since the update to kitkat, my S4 has been syncing and downloading email messages right around midnight (11:42 last night, 12:04 the night before, etc.) I have a pop3 email account set up (Comcast) and sync is turned on except that I have sync settings set to manual. Before kitkat, it would only retrieve email when I opened the app and actually hit the sync button. What changed in kitkat to cause it to retrieve email late at night? I've checked the settings and searched the forum. Any ideas? I could turn sync off entirely, but would have to turn it on each time I want to manually retrieve my email.

[Q] Can't sync music to android via USB topic

I'm trying to sync about 30 gigs of music to my phone via USB. The phone is a Galaxy s4 (running AOKP, if it matters). What happens is, I connect via USB and start the syncronization process. It works great for a while (files are copied, it's all going swimmingly) and then it just stops. At this point, if I try to navigate to the external SD card via windows explorer, windows explorer freezes. Disconnecting and reconnecting fixes the problem temporarily.

There appears to be no limit to the amount of time I can have the phone connected before it fails. The failure is triggered by transferring the files. I have used mediamonkey and musicbee -- neither works.

What do?

[Q] Google sync wakelocks occurring often! topic

Hi guys,

I've searched for this problem all over, but can't find anything about it.
I have had this problem for some time now, and occurs again and again.
Gmail, Drive and sometimes calendar get stuck while syncing on my device. Doesn't matter if I'm on data or WiFi. With Google Drive it often happens after I've updated a Google Sheet. Even though I don't exit the document before it says that it is saved, it somehow keeps on syncing in the background. I just found out when I got home from work after a 20 min drive, and when I went into settings and Google, the wheel next to Drive was spinning. The phone had been awake all the way home. The only way to stop it temporarily is by disabling and enabling sync for that specific app or generally.

I have absolutely no clue, what could cause these situations. I have tried clearing data and cache for those apps, but it hasn't helped.
Anyone had this happen as well?

Cheers

Trick/Tip to sync fb Contacts - Noob Friendly! topic

We all have FB & ever since ICS days FB syncing was disabled. A lot of us want to be able to sync images for contacts from fb. I personally don't like adding more & more apps as they can have some impact on performance or battery.

I had mentioned it in one of the forums, and few people had messaged me in private regarding it so I am just putting it out there in simple noob friendly manner. The steps do seem long, but once you get through it couple of times these are very very simple. For me this method has worked great over time, worth the effort for me atleast.

So I found a method back in the ICS days to be able to sync fb images with client profiles following Niranjan's method (I take no credit for it whatsoever and just providing information and can help someone if they need any guidance) but subsequently author stopped posting/responding the thread. So I will try to recompile a easy guide that can prove useful for anyone who wants to do it on their own. Please note Sense n other OEM roms already have this capability so u won't need this method.

Drawbacks
1. Slightly time consuming joining contacts.
2. Have to redo process everytime you update rom (dirty flash keeps older syncs but doesn't update)

Requirements:
1. Root and su - since you will be modifying system file.
2. Download and install aShell and aSqlLiteManager from google store - both free by developer Andsen.
3. Be able to decompile & compile apk files or alternatively I could do it for u but never try to rush or demand from me....I am doing it as a courtesy so never try to push me for it. You could always quote me (so I get notified) or send me a message in case I don't respond in a day.

Steps
1. We need to retrieve your current contactsprovider.apk file. Depending on your version of Android it can be located in different folder within the root directory:
a. Kitkat: /system/priv-app
b. Jellybean/ICS: /system/app/

2. Make sure to do a backup of the apk file before proceeding. If you want me to modify your apk file then upload it for me to modify and skip step 3-5.

3. Save the copied apk as contactsprovider1.apk Decompile (I used this guide in starting...noob friendly) the contactsprovider.apk and call it contacts. Rename attached arrays.xml.txt file to arrays.xml and add to decompiled apk's res/values/ folder.

4. Once you have added the file you should a total of 4 files (including the one you added). Recompile the apk folder as contacts.apk. Using Winrar/7-zip copy resources.arsc from contacts.apk and replace the file in contactprovider1.apk.

5. Upload the new contactsprovider1.apk to its correct directory and since you have the original backed up safetly you can rename the file to contactsprovider.apk after setting the permissions. Set permissions to -rw-r--r--

6. Open aShell (installed earlier), grant it superuser permissions. You will come across few tip boxes, so just close through them. Tick Root checkbox. Click File Explorer. Navigate to Data/Data/com.android.providers.contacts/databases and click on contacts2.db. Allow aSQLd mime sqlite to open the db. Click Open database with aSQLiteManager. Click Query. Enter following query "alter table raw_contacts add column is_restricted VARCHAR;" (don't include quotes). Click Run & you are done.

7. Press back button until you get a popup message asking you to save the changes you committed and you say YES to it.

8. Now login into your FB app and go to app settings and you will have a option at the bottom for sync. Select Sync all and give it about 5 minutes to sync through. You can open your contacts/people app and see if the names/images start coming through from FB.

9. One last step (boon for some curse for others) is you have to open up your contacts/people app and go to the contact who you want to sync with fb. Go to Edit, go to join and your FB contact will show up there and you join them together.

HTC Sync Notification topic

Hello, everytime i connect the phone to any computer (doesn't matter which one) i get a notification saying "HTC Sync Manager/ If HTC Sync Manager installer doesn;t start automatically, run it from the CD-ROM drive on your computer". I really don't know how to get rid of this notification and what it means, and i also think that dock mode doesn't work because of it. Any suggestions?

Browser Bookmark Sync Issues topic

This is my first ever post on XDA after reading forever...

Anyway, I found an interesting situation where after installing Beanstalk 4.4.200, my bookmark sync was gone. I had tried out pa-gapps for a while and this is when I noticed I had no Chrome bookmarks in my Android browser. Just to make sure I went to Settings > Accounts > Google > you@google.com, the Browser option is not there! So, I updated to the newest version of Beanstalk (4.4.225) and grabbed the gapps posted by the OP. Still, no solution.

Then, I found that there is an APK that takes care of this called ChromeBookmarksSyncAdaptor.apk
I stumbled upon it by digging into the zip file for pa-gapps-full. It should be under the gapps location: system > app > ChromeBookmarksSyncAdaptor.apk
I pulled it out of the pa-gapps-full package, put it on my Infuse SDCard (thank you Dropbox!), and installed it by using Root Browser to copy the apk file into /system/app

After a reboot, the option to Sync in the Android accounts area is there. I just had to check it. Now I can see bookmarks in my Android browser.

Thought I'd share incase anyone else ran into this problem.

Has anyone else seen this issue? If so, how did you resolve it?

[Q] Sync and lockscreen weather topic

Hi

Looks like our phone won't show weather animation because if the sync is turned off.

I dont know why. I have set the location and don't use locations service, but can't figure out why it needs sync to be on.

Is there a work around to enable animation with sync off??

To enable Bookmarks sync in CM 11 4.4.2 AOSP Browser, install the attached apk as a normal app, then go to accounts- Google and check "Browser". That's it, now your bookmarks will sync with the browser.

[Q] Gmail - Out of date sync that won't update topic

I'm on CM 4.4.2 and I've had this issue a few times now. My Google account syncs properly except for Gmail which is "stuck" in an out of date sync. No matter what I do, Gmail refuses to update itself. This results in not getting new mail notifications, and not being able to see any new email since the last sync.

Things I've tried:
  • Rebooting
    Clearing Gmail cache
Clearing Gmail app data + cache
Forcing a resync in Settings > accounts

This is what it looks like, you can see here 1 minute before the screenshot I forced a resync of my Google account, everything updates fine except for Gmail which is stuck on 2014-01-20.

After clearing app data + cache, Gmail is stuck on this screen:

The only way to workaround the issue is to remove my entire Google account and set it back up again on the device. This is not ideal, and the issue comes back at some point again.
