Hello XDA Members!
So yesterday I was surfing the xda forums and I came across this thread -> http://forum.xda-developers.com/show....php?t=2628398 which said that the Ubuntu Touch had finally become available for the Nexus 7 2013 Model FLO (wifi only). I was so happy because I had purchase the Nexus 7 for 2 main reasons. Reason 1, I wanted to get the PwnPad ROM from the great guys over at Pwnie Express so that I could turn my Nexus 7 tablet into a "Penetration Testing" tablet. I ended up going a bit of a different route and putting another PwnPad ROM called Kali PwnPad and that ended up working out great. Reason 2, was that I really wanted to try out Ubuntu Touch and see what it was all about and also see what I could do with it! The newest update for MultiRom now comes with an option when adding a ROM to select Ubuntu Touch, and in fact the newest version of MultiROM Manager even comes with an option to help you install Ubuntu Touch.
I ended up last night downloading the necessary files for Ubuntu Touch and flashing them with TWRP recovery and I was so happy when Ubuntu Touch loaded on my Nexus 7 FLO Tablet!
I was playing around with it for some time trying things out and while some things worked out great, others seemed to be a bit unstable. The camera for Ubuntu Touch seemed to work great I could take pictures the quality seemed decent I was happy about that. WiFi works with Ubuntu Touch and I was able to surf the web, so that was one thing off my list.
Issues:
However, it seemed that every time I rebooted Ubuntu Touch i was forced to reenter my WiFi password and for some reason it would not store it. Did anyone else notice this problem?
Next I tried out the terminal on Ubuntu Touch to see if I could try some of the command line programs from Ubuntu Linux but every time I would try and enter a command, the terminal would just hang and nothing would happen. Anyone else notice this?
I then tried looking for the Ubuntu Store to see if i could download or add any apps but I didn't see any Ubuntu Store which is a shame...I was really hoping that Ubuntu Touch would have some kind of way of adding programs like how they have the Ubuntu store on their Desktop operating systems.
There was a few other issues that I was having but I can't seem to remember them at this time...
So what I wanted to do was gather a place where we could talk and maybe discuss problems or solutions we have found to the Ubuntu Touch ROM and maybe we could help each other out so that we can make Ubuntu Touch a better experience for everyone! (Wishful thinking, maybe?)
Well...if you have tried out Ubuntu Touch and you have any advice, myself and others i am sure would love to hear what you have to say. If you haven't tried out Ubuntu Touch then go to this thread -> http://forum.xda-developers.com/show....php?t=2628398 and give it a try. Again you need to have a Nexus 7 2013 Model FLO (wifi only) tablet. Your tablet needs to be rooted with TWRP recovery manager installed. You also need to have MultiROM installed. Now I am not exactly sure about this, but from the research I have done you need to have the kexec-patch installed on your internal rom in order to use Ubuntu Touch. Now while i did have the kexec-patch installed on my internal (stock) rom, I don't see how that would apply to Ubuntu Touch since i don't think (not sure about this) again i don't think that Ubuntu Touch shares the kernel with your stock ROM. I would imagine that Ubuntu Touch uses its own kernel. Maybe someone here can help clarify this for me.
Later on today when I get some free time I am going to write a small tutorial, step-by-step details on how you can install Ubuntu Touch on your Nexus 7 tablet so please be on the lookout for that. I will put the link for that tutorial in here, but i assure you it is quite simple.
Last thing, has anyone heard of Ubuntu Touch becoming available for the Nexus 7 2013 LTE/4G Model DEB Tablet? I also have that Nexus 7 tablet and I would love to be able to use Ubuntu Touch on that device also...If anyone knows if it is available or if anyone is working on it then please let us know!
Well i hope to hear what you all have to say, and I can't wait to see what improvements and advances Ubuntu Touch will have in the future!
