Wireless Charging Car Mount Options? topic

I just got a Nexus 5 and really liking the Qi wireless charging built inside the device. I have seen some options on the internet for wireless charging car mounts and wanted to see if anyone had any reviews and/or feedback before I purchase

I have seen the iOttie Easy Flex Wireless at CES, Choe on Amazon and an Owl something option. (Sorry - I was trying to post the links to more details but since I am new I cannot.)

Please - any feedback would be great because I really want to purchase SOMETHING for both mine and my wife's vehicle. Thanks! :good:

[Q] Q: GTP 8.4 Wireless Charging? topic

I've been searching the interwebs and went to the Samsung store at Best Buy (mistake) and haven't been able to find a concrete answer.

Does the Galaxy Tab Pro 8.4 have wireless charging? Qi? Actually any of the new galaxy tab pro line?

The back is not replaceable like other galaxy devices so an aftermarket replacement back with wireless charging is not foreseeable correct?

Thanks for anyone who can help!

[Wireless charging] Xperia Z1 topic

Hi guys....

As we all know, Sony is member of Wireless Power Consortiuma*, just like Qualcomm, LG, HTC or IKEA - believe it or not)

So my question is - is there any chance to implement Wireless charging on Z1?

I know there's many solution on ebay (I'm not sure there's for Z1 but still...)

I would like to hear some options from engineers or developer who actually knows something about this subject...

So please don't spam thread if you don't have something smart to say...

Thanks ;)

Modded a Qi Wireless Charger to go in my Car topic

So I was talking with a friend about my Tylt Qi Charger that I love and as we discussing them I remembered that I bought some no name Qi charger off amazon a few weeks before Tylt's first big half off sale.

Well it had this awful loud chirp sound when it started charging so it was demoted to a travel charger since I kept the Tylt at work.

So I started thinking, how can I mod this thing to actually be useful (I hadn't used it in months) and then I started thinking..."What can I attach it to? An end table, a nightstand, a couch cushion, etc?" I was trying to figure out something that I could just throw my phone down casually (after ripping the speaker off) and it just start charging with no effort.

So obviously I finally came to the conclusion of my car.

I didn't really think about sharing it on here until after it was finished but luckily I did take a couple photos to send to my buddy (mentioned above) to show him what I was getting myself into.

Here are some pictures:

First I had to take the thing apart:

Attachment 2625936

Next was my gf's hair dryer *cough* I mean heat gun from the work bench...to get the glue loose.

Attachment 2625940

Then I yanked it off with a flat head screw driver

Attachment 2625943

Next I was in the car and tried this just as a proof of concept (it looked awful)

Attachment 2625944

I started thinking a little more and decided I could put it inside my center console.

So I pulled the flip-up piece off the center console and there were just 4 screws holding the vinyl to the actual plastic on the inside, so I pulled the two pieces apart and taped the charger inside just hoping it would have enough juice to charge my phone which would sit on top of the center console while it is closed.

I got lucky and it does have enough juice, I have yet to see how much it will actually end up charging the device while connected via bluetooth and streaming Spotify but even if it just holds the charge steady while all that is going on, it is good enough for me.

The next three pictures are once it is all wired up:

Attachment 2625953

And then I had to figure out a way to keep the phone in place on top of this console while driving so I took two small strops of velcro and put the fizzy side on the console and the slimmer hard side on my phone case and there you have it!

Attachment 2625955
Attachment 2625956

Tomorrow, I'll use my girlfriend's phone to take a picture of it actually charging and add that here too just so you all believe that it actually works :p

Just thought I would post this to inspire others to do similar things and if you have any ideas about how to improve it, I'm open to suggestions!

Oh and I did do some preliminary testing to check for an overheating and that all did end up being ok. lol

Wireless Charging - is it worth it? topic

Hi folks,

I've been looking into wireless charging because, I thought, I could set up my phone to charge wireless; that is, across the room, for example. However, upon closer inspection, it looks like I'd be relegated to setting the device on a "base" in order for it to charge. Now, perhaps I was naive (or dumb) in thinking that I could chat away on the phone or otherwise keep it at my desk while some special hardware emits energy through the air to charge my device(s), but I can't for the life of me figure out what the big deal is about putting my phone on a base—that's connected to the wall(!)—to charge my phone in a manner that's less efficient than hooking it up to our 3.0 cable (which, I might add, charges my phone from the red to full in about a half hour). After all, to even take advantage of this charging method we have to buy a special battery, equipment, and even a new case that's compatible with the charger. I just don't get the value...

So, I defer to the community to enlighten me--what do you think of the setup and what benefits do you see form your investment? Also, do you notice a difference in battery performance compared to the stock battery?

Thanks,
R

Question about Wireless Charging Pad topic

I currently have the dock and enjoy using my phone as a night clock.. If I lean the wireless charging dock up at a 80 degree angle will the phone still stay on, and still charge? Anyone who has this, would you mind trying it? Is the phone magnetized to the base? Is the base slippery or rubberized?

My Nexus Wireless Charger Car Mount Setup topic

Hi everybody! I've seen a few threads about figuring how to use the Nexus Wireless Charger as a car mount/dock for our Nexus 5 phones and this is the solution that I've come up with. It's not the cheapest option as this charger costs more than most others out there. However, I wanted to utilize one of the standout features of the Nexus 5 which is being able to use the wireless magnetic charger out of the box without any modifications. I also didn't want to do any drastic mods to mount that to my car. I've seen other threads showing how some of you smart engineer types can rig some cool setups using paper clips and rubber bands. I'm no Macguyver (though I wish I was that smart).

I actually have tried to mount a wireless charging dock. This was a few years ago when I had the Palm Pre, which had the wireless charging (and also magnetic) Touchstone. To keep it short, I used this moldable plastic stuff to fix it to a car mount, which was then screwed onto my dashboard. It was not pretty at all. Plus, that moldable plastic ended up melting on a hot summer day. Shortly after that Palm got sold to HP and webOS went the way of the Dodo. I moved on to a Samsung Galaxy SII and have been missing the webOS cards and the Touchstone ever since.
Now comes the Nexus 5. To my surprise Google/LG also announces the awesome Nexus Wireless Charger. FINALLY something equivalent to the amazing Palm Touchstone. I just HAVE to have it.

Once you use something like a Touchstone and the Nexus Wireless Charger, it's tough to go back. Yes, you can still plug in the microUSB cord and yes it's not a big deal. But once you start using a nice magnetic wireless charger, you'll know. You just pop the phone on, it holds in place, and charges. Simple. In the car it makes absolute sense. Now I wish that the stock Android homescreen supports landscape mode by default and that there was a better interface for car use, but those are software issues which I think will only get better with time. As far as hardware goes though, the Nexus 5 along with the Nexus Wireless Charger on a good car mount works amazing. No need to modify the phone or your car dashboard and the magnet holds the phone on strongly. The only main disadvantage hardware-wise is that the phone has to be naked for the magnet to hold strongly. I also wish the Nexus 5 has the Touchless Controls of the Moto X; that would seem like the perfect thing to do have while the phone is docked on the car.

TLDR version: Magnetic wireless chargers are friggin awesome and are even more awesomer to use as a car dock. List of stuff, pics and video below.

Please excuse my dirty dusty car, poor speaking skills and shaky camera.

The 'Sticky Suction' items are new and don't seem to be on the site yet, but they're listed in the 2014 catalog PDF. I was able to order directly from them and pick up since I live nearby in Southern California. I like their modular approach to the car mounts by having the ball and dual T adapters and I was glad to find something that I could easily stick the Nexus wireless charger to for my setup.

Also if you're wondering, this is the USB Car Charger I'm using and it seems to not have any problems so far.
